Kilimanjaro: 7-day Machame Route
The classic 'Whiskey Route': the most scenic way up Kilimanjaro, with a seventh day that makes a real difference to your summit…
Our highest-success route. Eight days from the remote western forests across the Shira Plateau, with the best acclimatisation profile on the mountain.
Lemosho starts on the quiet western side of Kilimanjaro and takes two days to cross the vast Shira Plateau before joining the Machame route at Barranco. Those extra days at moderate altitude are why it has the best summit record of any route, and why we recommend it to anyone who has the time.
The first days are also the wildest: the Lemosho forest is home to elephant and buffalo, so an armed ranger walks with you on day one.
Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then on to the Lemosho trailhead. A gentle afternoon walk through rainforest to the first camp, with a ranger escort.
Climb out of the forest into heath and moorland. The path crests the Shira Ridge and drops onto the plateau, with Kibo suddenly in view ahead.
An easy day across the plateau, with an optional detour to Shira Cathedral for the views. Good acclimatisation with little effort.
Climb high to Lava Tower at 4,630 m for lunch, then descend to Barranco through the giant groundsel forest. The classic climb-high, sleep-low day.
Start with the Barranco Wall scramble, then undulating valleys to Karanga. A short day to rest and eat.
Up to base camp by early afternoon. Early dinner, kit check and briefing, then sleep until the midnight wake-up.
Midnight start. Slow, steady switchbacks to Stella Point for sunrise, then the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Camp in the forest.
Down through the rainforest to the gate, certificates, and a transfer to your hotel.
If you have eight days, Lemosho. It is quieter for the first three days and gives you the most gradual ascent. If you have seven, Machame is excellent.
Yes, by combining Shira 1 and Shira 2 into one day. We only recommend it for people who have already been above 4,000 m.

I visited Tanzania for the first time, doing both a 6 day Kilimanjaro trek and 5 day safari with Neeko Tours. I could not have had a better experience! Both my mountain guide and safari guide were absolutely fantastic. I was safe, happy, and well-fed the entire time! I plan on returning and exploring with them again in the future. By traveling with them, you’re supporting a local community, making the experience even more meaningful.

I was recommended Neeko Tours by a friend who had done the Lemosho Kilimanjaro trek with them. I am so glad I did because we had the most amazing experience with the kindest, strongest and energetic guides, cook and porters! Our guides Harold and Andrew supported us every step of the way up, shared their stories and knowledge with us and gave us the encouragement we needed to keep going on summit night. Our cook gave us hot water bottles at night, made ginger tea when we felt a bit sick and even made us a cake on the mountain to congratulate us on summiting! We were well fed with nutritious and filling meals that I always looked forward to. Lastly, our superhuman porters who do all the hard work to make the experience comfortable for us! They sang us songs, gave us fist bumps and danced with us throughout the trek and on the bus ride back. I highly recommend that you book your Kili trek with Neeko Tours because Gasper and the crew will be sure to keep you safe and give you an experience you won't forget. Their hospitality started long before our trek and continues even after!

Neeko Tours set up a perfect one day trip (including a packed lunch) to Arusha National Park, and we saw all the animals we were hoping to see. Colobus monkeys were a highlight! Lupogo was a great driver, very friendly and funny, also very knowledgeable about the park, and was able to take us to just the right stopping point for great photos. Gasper organized all the details, arranged pick up and drop off at my hotel, always greeted us with a smile and bottles of water. We saw the peak of Mount Meru as the clouds came and went. Definitely recommend Neeko Tours for a short day trip, a multi day safari, or a Mount Kilimanjaro trek.
Gasper, who runs Neeko, founded a primary school in his home village on land his family gave. Around 200 children learn there. Charity climbers get a discount on the climb, a fundraising page, and a visit to the school to see what they paid for.
